Some parents notice it at daycare pickup, when other kids are chatting and theirs isn't. Some notice it at home, in the meltdowns that happen when a child can't get the words out. Others hear it from a pediatrician who says "let's wait and see," and aren't sure they want to wait. If something has you wondering, that's reason enough to ask.
Signs worth a conversation with a speech therapist:

It starts with an assessment of about an hour. Our SLP plays with your child, listens, and asks what you're seeing at home, then builds a plan around the moments that matter to your family.
Sessions use our therapy rooms and gym with swings, a rock wall, and a climbing structure, because movement often helps kids find words. We support late talking, understanding language, speech sounds, social communication, alternative communication (AAC), and feeding therapy in our dedicated feeding room.
Parents are coached during sessions, so the practice keeps going at home. See how we approach speech and feeding therapy.
Your speech therapist plays with your child, listens to how they communicate, and asks what you're seeing at home.
Goals tied to real moments: asking for a snack, being understood at preschool, mealtimes that feel calmer.
Play-based sessions, and one or two things to practice at home each week, so progress keeps going between visits.

Plenty of Woodridge families have a child in more than one therapy. Here, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA therapy all happen in the same building, so your child's therapists coordinate goals and share what's working, and you don't have to be the messenger. One front desk, one schedule, one plan.
First words, being understood, picture and device communication, and mealtimes that feel calmer.
Fine motor, sensory, and self-care skills, from getting dressed to holding a crayon.
Play-based, child-led support for communication, social, and daily-living skills.
The bigger picture
For some kids, a speech delay shows up alongside differences in play, social connection, or routines. Sometimes that points to autism, and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, it helps to have people who can tell the difference.
ABA therapy
If an autism diagnosis is part of your child's story, ABA therapy happens in the same building, with a team that already knows your child. It's play-based, led by your child's strengths, and built around your family's goals.
Learn about ABA therapy at this center →If your child already has speech through Early Intervention or school, you might wonder whether private therapy is worth it. Here's what it adds that those programs aren't set up to do:
That's when a lot of families add private therapy. Early Intervention ends at 3, and not every child qualifies for school services or gets as much support as before. Private speech therapy keeps your child's progress going through the change, and we'll coordinate with your child's school team.
Most families use insurance, and we check your benefits before your first visit.

They have been essential in understanding and supporting our child's needs across multiple areas, including speech, large motor occupational therapy, and executive functioning for ADHD.
— A local familyFrom day one they have been amazing and helpful. Communication is always easy and I always have my questions answered within hours. My son's therapists always let me know how he is doing after each session and even did their own full evaluations even though he has records from previous practices.
My son has been making amazing progress in just the few weeks he has been here than anywhere else. It's a process but he is certainly getting what he needs and I couldn't be more pleased :)
I am so so grateful for this place. My son has been doing amazing because of the therapist that are here. I can't stress enough how proud we are of the turnaround my son has been doing.
A late talker is a toddler who says fewer words than expected but understands well and is on track otherwise. A language delay can affect understanding, not only talking. A speech-language pathologist can tell which it is, usually in a single one-hour assessment.
Often, yes. Because both therapies happen at our Woodridge center, we try to schedule sessions back to back, so you make one trip instead of two.
Many families do both. When Early Intervention ends at 3, not every child qualifies for school services, and school therapy focuses on what your child needs in the classroom. Private therapy keeps working on goals at home and with friends, and it continues through school breaks.
Many plans do. In Illinois we accept BCBS PPO, BCBS Blue Choice, BCBS HMO plans through Endeavor Health and Ascension, UnitedHealthcare, United Behavioral Health, and TriWest. Coverage and referral rules vary, so our intake team checks your specific plan before your first visit.
Your insurance card, any past evaluations or school plans (an IFSP or IEP), and a quick list of the words or signs your child uses. Most of all, bring your questions.
